It didn’t take long for Mayor Eric Adams of New York to articulate what he liked about a welcome center for migrants and asylum seekers that he visited on Sunday in Rocca di Papa, a town about 15 miles outside Rome. “In two months they’re going from migrant to participating in society,” Mr. Adams said after a 30-minute tour of the center, where migrants from countries including Syria and Sudan are processed, take Italian lessons and receive health care before being sent out for job opportunities. The mayor, who has called on the federal government to expedite work permits and relocation assistance for migrants, repeated that appeal after visiting the center, which is run by the Red Cross and receives funding from the Italian government. He said he wanted help from the Biden administration to develop something similar in New York, where more than 190,000 migrants have arrived over the last two years. Mr. Adams’s visit came on the last day of a three-day trip to Rome, where he met Pope Francis at the Vatican and spoke at an international conference on peace.

In the midst of an exceptionally warm winter, resorts like Campo Felice have a major problem: there’s no snow. And a long-running drought means there isn’t enough water to make the amount of artificial snow needed to paint its slopes white. And with a lack of rain and record-breaking heatwaves, the lakes that normally provide water for artificial snow have run dry. Across all of Italy’s ski resorts, nearly 90% use artificial snow to some degree, according to Carlo Carmagnola, a snow expert with Météo France who studies the impact of climate change on ski resorts. These changes have been hard not just on the Lallini brothers, but their employees, which usually number 250 in the ski season.

The MSI party grew from the ashes of Benito Mussolini’s National Fascist Party after it was dismantled at the end of World War II when the dictator was deposed and killed. Gotor and Rocca laid a wreath at a monument to the fallen activists, but left before the fascist salute was carried out, their offices told CNN. It turned out to be 30,000 to 50,000 ancient Roman bronze coins dating back to the 4th century. Italy's ministry of culture said it could point to a hidden shipwreck in the area. AdvertisementAdvertisementA diver made a rare discovery while exploring a seabed off the coast of Sardinia, Italy: 30,000 to 50,000 ancient Roman coins that may be evidence of a nearby hidden shipwreck more than a thousand years old. Italian Ministry of CultureThe coins are called follis, which Roman emperor Diocletian introduced in AD 294, according to The Guardian. Italian Ministry of CultureThe location of the coins might indicate that there's an ancient shipwreck hidden somewhere nearby, the Italian ministry of culture said, according to the AP.

The diver spotted some “metal remains” in shallow water near the town of Arzachena, the ministry said in a statement Saturday. These turned out to be “follis”—Roman bronze or copper coins also later used as Byzantine currency. Italian Ministry of CultureBased on their weight, the total number of coins in the find is estimated to be between 30,000 and 50,000, the ministry said. According to the statement, the coins date from 324 to 340 CE and were produced by mints across the Roman empire. Italian Ministry of CultureThe culture ministry said the location where the coins were found—a sandy clearing between the beach and an area of seagrass—could, theoretically, preserve a shipwreck.

ROME (AP) — A diver who spotted something metallic not far from Sardinia's coast has led to the discovery of tens of thousands of ancient bronze coins. The ministry didn't say exactly when the first diver caught a glimpse of something metallic just off shore Sardinia, not far from the town of Arzachena. A ministry statement estimated that there are at least about 30,000 and possibly as many as 50,000, given their collective weight. The coins were mainly found in a wide area of sand between the underwater seagrass and the beach, the ministry said. Given the location and shape of the seabed, there could be remains of ship wreckage nearby, the ministry said.

Pope Pius XII, who led the Catholic Church from 1939 until 1958, never went beyond allusions to the Nazi genocide in his public statements. Photo: Associated PressROME—For decades, controversy over why Pope Pius XII didn’t speak out against the Nazi Holocaust has troubled the Catholic Church. New research has revealed evidence that an antisemitic Vatican aide played a role in the wartime pope’s silence, as did fear of provoking violence against Catholics under Nazi rule and against the Vatican itself.

Pope Francis meeting with a group of women Saturday at the Vatican before a session of the Synod of Bishops. Photo: Alessandra Tarantino/Associated PressROME—A Vatican gathering called to debate potentially far-reaching changes in the Catholic Church adjourned on Saturday with a final report that barely referred to one of its most controversial questions: the place of LGBTQ people in the church. That omission, following recent signs of liberalization on the matter from Pope Francis , was likely to disappoint Catholic advocates for LGBTQ rights. Proponents of women’s ordination received slightly more encouragement, as the Vatican meeting called for further research into the possibility of women deacons.

Israel Protests Pope Francis' Statement on Gaza

"It is inconceivable that an announcement essentially expressing concern for the residents of Gaza is issued at the same time Israel is burying 1,300 murdered citizens," Israel's Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen said in a statement on Sunday evening. Earlier in the day, the pope had called for humanitarian corridors for Gaza and for the release of civilian hostages held by Hamas. Cohen spoke with his Vatican counterpart, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, on Sunday evening, the Israeli foreign ministry said, and called on the Vatican to unequivocally condemn the attacks. On Monday, the pope's representative in the Holy Land, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, said that he was willing to offer himself in exchange for Israeli children being held hostage.

Michael Bloomberg is an outspoken critic of remote work. He thinks employees are slacking off and hitting the golf course during the workday, he told CBS. A March study by Stanford University researchers found that remote work "powered a huge boom in golfing," with visits to golf courses surging on weekdays and mid-afternoons compared to pre-pandemic times. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn August, he wrote an opinion piece for The Washington Post, arguing that remote work for federal employees had "gone on too long." Just days after Bloomberg's article was published, Biden reportedly ramped up efforts to get federal employees back to the office.

[1/3] Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, lights up the night sky with eruptions as seen from Rocca Della Valle, Italy, August 13, 2023. Etna Walk/Marco Restivo/ Handout via REUTERSCATANIA, Sicily, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Flights serving the eastern Sicilian city of Catania were halted on Monday after an eruption from nearby Mount Etna, local authorities said, bringing fresh travel woe to the crisis-plagued Italian airport. The 3,330 metre (10,925 ft) high volcano burst into action overnight, firing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island. Flights to and from Catania, a popular tourist destination, would be suspended until 8:00 p.m. (1800 GMT), the airport said on Twitter. The latest cancellations at Catania airport, which attracts more arrivals than the island's capital, Palermo, came a month after a fire at a terminal building led to weeks of disruptions for passengers.
